Long Island Tick, Lyme Disease, and Deer Management Project
(LDD Project)
Long Island residents are seeing more ticks, more Lyme disease concern, and more damage to gardens and native plants as the deer population grows. These issues are connected. They affect public health, landscaping, and the island’s natural character.
At the July 2026 LICA meeting, a proposal was made to form a citizens committee to study these issues and develop practical recommendations for the island. Board support was strong.
Our goal is not to eliminate deer from Long Island.
It is to restore a healthier balance: protect residents, preserve the island’s landscape, and support a sustainable deer population.
The work will be guided by current research, wildlife and public health expertise, and the views of both year-round and seasonal residents.
What the project may include:

A resident survey

An assessment of current deer and tick conditions

A review of town management options

Public education on tick prevention and landscape protection

An Integrated Deer and Lyme Disease Management Plan for the community and the Town to consider
We are forming a steering committee and organizing subcommittees around the topics above.
